For the lowest rates for your Hilo car rental request a quote from Hilo Discount Car Rental. We can service your rental needs whether you arrive via plane at the Hilo International Airport (ITO) or via ship at the Hilo Harbor Port.
Hilo is the largest town on the Big Island Hawai'i, over 43 thousand residents as of 2010, and is the county seat of the County of Hawai'i.
Our town has a history going back to the period of Ancient Hawaii (circa 300 - 800 CE) when Polynesian navigators from Southeast Asia first arrived on the islands of the Polynesian Triangle. Hawaii's oral history includes many mentions of events taking place along Hilo's Wailuku and Wailoa Rivers during this period. The Hawaiian Islands are at the northern end of the Polynesian Triangle which extends to Easter Island in the southwest and New Zealand in the southeast.
My favorite special Hilo event occurs in April every year. The Merrie Monarch Festival, honoring the memory of King David Kalakaua. This week-long cultural festival is dedicated to restoring Hawaiian cultural traditions, including the most prestigious of all hula contests. Participants from hula schools world-wide come to attend or compete in the festival.
